Exploring Natural Remedies for Common Ailments

(Because sometimes the best medicine comes straight from nature—and a little love.)

Dogs have an amazing way of healing us with their goofy grins, wiggly tails, and unconditional love. But what about when they need a little healing themselves?

In the past, I was quick to reach for conventional fixes when our pup, Orson, had minor health hiccups. Don’t get me wrong—there’s absolutely a place for traditional veterinary care (always consult your vet first!). But along the way, I started exploring natural, holistic remedies for the everyday stuff that cropped up.

And wow… I’ve seen some amazing results that made me a believer.

Here are a few ways holistic wellness has helped Orson—and how it might help your dog too.

🌱 Orson’s Tummy Troubles and the Pumpkin Miracle

(aka The Great Pumpkin)

I’ll never forget the week Orson got hit with a bout of digestion drama (yes, the dreaded runny poop situation 🙈). I was about to panic over a potential vet bill when my mother-in-law suggested adding a spoonful of plain pumpkin puree to his meals.

Within 24 hours—boom. His stomach calmed, and his energy was back. Not only did it save me a vet trip, but it also taught me that sometimes simple, natural solutions can make a world of difference.

Pumpkin is rich in fiber and nutrients, making it a natural gut-soother for many dogs. Now, I always keep a can in the pantry “just in case.”

Pro-Tip! - Since it only takes a spoonful or two of pumpkin, use the rest for pumpkin cookies, ice cream, or mini tarts! You and your pup can channel your inner #PSL. Since today's the first day of Autumn, it's all we can think about 🥧 🎃

🌼 The Calming Power of Lavender for Stress

Orson is usually pretty chill during thunderstorms, but fireworks? Forget it. He paces, whimpers, and becomes a little bundle of nerves. Last 4th of July, desperate to ease his stress, I tried diffusing lavender essential oil in the room (being careful to use a pet-safe dilution and keeping it well out of his reach).

To my surprise, it worked. Within minutes, he stretched out, sighed, and drifted off to sleep beside me. 🌙

It wasn’t magic—it was the gentle, calming effect of aromatherapy. And it was a beautiful reminder that holistic remedies aren’t about curing everything—they’re about supporting comfort and balance.

More Natural Wellness Ideas for Your Pup

Here are a few holistic practices that other dog parents (myself included) have found helpful:

  • Coconut oil for skin and coat health 🥥

  • Chamomile tea (cooled) as an occasional tummy soother 🌼

  • Gentle massage to relieve stiffness and anxiety 💆‍♂️🐾

  • Probiotics for gut balance and immunity 🦠

Always check with your vet before introducing new remedies—but don’t be afraid to explore the natural toolbox nature provides.

A very important bit of advice that goes hand-in-hand with talking with your vet about natural remedies: just because it's a safe remedy for people, doesn't make it safe for dogs! While there are lots of in-common remedies, you definitely don't want to introduce a toxic substance to your dog while trying to heal them! Always check with your vet! Checking with your vet doesn't necessarily mean making an appointment. Some veterinary offices are happy to advise you over the phone with a straightforward question or give you details in an email.

Why Holistic Dog Wellness Matters

The best part about incorporating holistic remedies into Orson’s life isn’t just the results—it’s the bond we’ve built. Helping him heal in gentle, natural ways has made me more present, intentional, and tuned in to his needs.

At the end of the day, dogs don’t just need us to be their providers—they need us to be their partners in wellness.

💌 A Little Nudge for You

If you’ve ever tried a natural remedy that worked wonders for your dog, I’d love to hear about it. Share your story in the comments, or better yet, send this post to a fellow dog parent who could use some holistic inspiration.

Because when our pups feel good, we all feel good. 🐾❤️
